Alexa Williams drives in 100th career RBI
DAVIS, Calif. - The George Washington softball team defeated UC Davis 6-2 on Sunday, picking up its first true road win of the season and improving to 8-11 ahead of tomorrow's rubber match against the Aggies.Â
The Buff & Blue looked to go up early and loaded the bases with its first three batters, but UC Davis held firm and retired the next three in a row to escape the first inning unscathed. The Aggies then retaliated on offense, drawing a leadoff walk and working the runner over the third base before scoring on a sacrifice bunt. UC Davis played more small ball in the second inning, and with the help of a GW error, they took a 2-0 lead on a single to right field.
The Revolutionaries' offense, which showed its potential to catch fire in the first inning, started to churn again in the fourth inning and did not stop. Ashley Corpuz led-off the fourth inning with a double which was followed by a Paige Hayward two-run home run. Hayward caught every bit of her second homer of the season and launched it over the left-field wall to even the score at 2-2.
GW pressed on and took the lead in the fifth inning on an Alexa Williams RBI infield single, which scored a sprinting Greco from second. It was then Hayward's turn again, as the reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week drove in her third run of the day on a hard hit single to right-center.
In the sixth, the Buff & Blue looked to add on to its 4-2 lead and loaded the bases for Alena Ramirez, who provided insurance with a two-run single up the middle.
Hayward, Ramirez and Williams were highlights for GW offensively. Hayward finished 2-4 with one home run, three RBI and one run scored. Ramirez went 2-4 with two RBI, while Williams was 1-2 with the game-winning RBI, which was also the 100th RBI of her storied Buff & Blue career. Â
Sophia Torreso made the start for GDUB and went 3.1, allowing two runs on four hits. Cece Smith came in to relieve Torreso and gets the win after giving up no runs on just one hit in the final 3.2 innings.
GW returns to La Rue Field to decide the series winner tomorrow at 3 p.m. ET (12 p.m. PT) with coverage available on ESPN+.
