WASHINGTON - Coming off two straight wins at home, the George Washington men's soccer team (2-0-2, 0-0-0 A-10) adventures to Southern California this weekend for a pair of matches against stiff competition. The Revolutionaries will battle San Diego State on Friday at 10 p.m. ET, before taking on San Diego on Sunday at 4 p.m. ET. Friday's match will be streamed on SDSU's website, while Sunday's match will be featured on ESPN+.
STILL UNBEATEN
Sitting at 2-0-2 through its first four matches, GW is off to its best start through the first four matches of a season since 2016, when the Buff and Blue matched this year's start. The last time GW stayed undefeated through its first five matches was in 1984, when the team started the year on a six-match win streak en route to a 6-0-1 start through seven games.
OPPONENTS IN THE POLLS
A tall task lies ahead for Revolutionaries this weekend - both of GW's opponents have started the year well, and both received votes in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Top 25: San Diego State received eight votes, while San Diego received five votes.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS
San Diego State opened the season with a draw against Denver, followed by wins over Cal State Bakersfield and Cal Poly. The Aztecs' backline and goalkeeping have stumped their opponents thus far, not allowing a single goal through their first three matches.
Austin Brummett leads the Aztecs into action with three points (1 goal, 1 assist), while Logan Erb has seen the majority of work in net for San Diego State and has five saves on the season.
GW trails the all-time series against San Diego State 0-1-0 after falling, 3-0, in Southern California in 2015.
San Diego enters the weekend at 3-1 with wins over Seattle, No. 6 Washington and Cal Poly, and a loss to Cal State Northridge. The Toreros will face UC Riverside on Friday evening, where they will look to improve upon their 8-4 goals-scored advantage before facing GW on Sunday afternoon.
Midfielder Mason Tunbridge is tied for third in the NCAA with four assists and leads the Toreros with six points (1 goal, 4 assist). Luis Ludosan has seen the bulk of the work in net for the Toreros and has a 1.33 goals allowed average through three starts.
This will be the first-ever meeting between GW and San Diego.
LOOKING AHEAD
Following the West Coast trip, GW will return to the DMV ahead of its match against Loyola Chicago on Saturday, Sept. 16. The first-ever meeting between the Ramblers and Revolutionaries at the GW Soccer Field will kick off at 3 p.m., and the match will be streamed on ESPN+.
