Cross Country Primed for Paul Short Run

WASHINGTON – Following a fast start to the 2023 season, the George Washington men's and women's cross country teams are set to compete in the Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University on Saturday. The women's 6K race is slated to begin at 11:45 a.m. and the men's 8K race will follow at approximately 12:15 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
Three weeks ago, the Buff & Blue competed in the Navy Invitational, securing a second-place finish in both the men's and women's races. The women, led by sophomore Sarah Mitchell, tallied a team score of 50 to finish second out of the 11-team field. Mitchell registered a 6K time of 22:17.87 to finish sixth out of the 94-runner field. For her efforts, Mitchell was named the A-10 Women's Performer of the Week on Sept. 13. Also putting together strong performances were first-year Julia Shanes (22:30.47) and sophomore Una Boylan (22:30.86), who both finished in the top 10 as individuals.
On the men's side, GW also recorded a second-place finish with a total score of 53. Leading the way for GW's men's team was sophomore Austin Brotemarkle, who tallied a 4.9-mile PR with a time of 25:11.90. Brotemarkle finished sixth as an individual and his stellar performance earned him A-10 Men's Performer of the Week honors. Along with Brotemarkle, senior Kevin Conlon also tallied a PR in the race, recording a time of 25:15.77 to finish eighth out of the 95 runners in the men's race.
REGIONAL RANKINGS
Both the men's and women's program found themselves ranked in the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Week Two regional rankings. The rankings were announced on Monday, Sept. 25, and separate all Division I teams into nine various regions across the country. For the women, GW clocked in at 10th, while the men were placed 12th. The next set of regular season polls are slated to be released on Monday, Oct. 2.
THE COMPETITION
The Paul Short Run, hosted by Lehigh University, will be held at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course in Bethlehem, Pa. The women's 6K gold race is scheduled to begin at 11:45 a.m., with the men's 8K brown race slated to begin immediately after at approximately 12:15 p.m.
Last year, North Carolina claimed both the men's and women's team titles. The Tar Heels tallied a score of 64 in the men's 8K and a mark of 63 in the women's 6K. In total, over 130 institutions competed in the event last year across the three college level races that took place.
