GW Dominates Johns Hopkins on Sunday, Slips against Bucknell on Saturday

BALTIMORE - The George Washington men's water polo team split games on the opening weekend of MAWPC play. The Revolutionaries lost a close match at the Smith Center against Bucknell, 13-11, before beating Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, 20-14, on Sunday. The Revolutionaries move to 5-5 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.
Bucknell 13, GW 11
Three unanswered fourth-quarter goals for the Bison ended up being the difference as GW fell to Bucknell, 13-11, in the 2023 home opener at the Smith Center.
The two sides traded goals in the first half, which culminated in a 6-5 Bucknell lead at the midway point. The Revolutionaries put the pressure on Bucknell with a 6-4 advantage in the third quarter and led 11-10 heading into the fourth, but Bucknell tightened up and left victorious after holding GW scoreless in the final frame.
Mateus Stellet and Viktor Jovanovic paced GW with five points apiece, followed by Andrija Sekulic who had four. Goalkeeper Luca Castorina added 14 saves to his season total.
GW 20, Johns Hopkins 14
The Revolutionaries hit the ground running with 10 first-quarter goals against Johns Hopkins, which was enough to fend off Blue Jays for the rest of the morning as GW cruised to a 20-14 victory in Baltimore.
Sekulic led the first-quarter barrage with three goals, followed by Stellet and Jovanovic with two apiece. The Revolutionaires led 15-8 at halftime, and while they were outscored 6-5 after the break, GW had done enough in the first half to bring home the victory.
Sekulic had a team-high six goals, while Jovanovic had four and Stellet and Leo Lueddemann each added three. Newcomer Peter Durkovic had a game-high four assists and finished second on GW with five points. Castorina made 17 saves - his second-most in a game this year.

GW gears up for an action-packed week with three MAWPC games on deck. The Revolutionaries will travel to Navy on Thursday (7 p.m.), before returning home to face Johns Hopkins on Friday (7 p.m. - Long Bridge Park) and Fordham on Saturday (10 a.m. - Smith Center).
