WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's soccer team released its 2023 schedule on Monday. The 17-match schedule features nine home matches on The Vern and marks the team's 12th season under the leadership of Head Coach Craig Jones.
GW will look to return to the Atlantic 10 Championships for the third time in the last four years, and will have to play through a slate of nine non-conference contests and eight A-10 matches to get there.
"It's a very competitive schedule that will challenge our group to be at their best in each game to get results," said Jones. "The preseason games will be important for us to get our new players on the field and start to build some chemistry and cohesion within the group. We attack the front end of the schedule with some tough away trips to get the group ready to play on the road, and I believe there is a good mix of opponents in our non-conference schedule to prepare us for the A-10 opponents we will play this year."
The Buff and Blue will utilize three exhibition matches in mid-August to prepare for the regular season. GW will host William and Mary on Saturday, Aug. 12 at 3 p.m. and St. Joseph's on Wednesday, Aug. 16 at 3 p.m., before traveling to Mary Washington on Sunday, Aug. 20 at 5 p.m. for the final regular-season tune up.
GW opens the regular season with a pair of matches on the road, starting with a trip to Norfolk, Va., to face Old Dominion on Thursday, Aug. 24 for a 7:00 p.m. battle. The squad then heads to the Bronx on Sunday, Aug. 28 for a 1 p.m. match against Manhattan College.
The Buff and Blue opens its home slate on Saturday, Sept. 2, when it plays host to Iona at 3 p.m., and is then back on The Vern on Tuesday, Sept. 5 when Stony Brook comes to town for a 3 p.m. bout.
Lucas Matuszewski, Roee Tenne and Carter Humm are among the top returners from the 2022 squad. Matuszewski is back after scoring twice last season while helping to lock down GW's backline for over 1200 minutes, Humm returns in the midfield off a career-high five points and Tenne is back after finishing second on the 2022 team with four assists.
The Revolutionaries will hit the road once more before the start of conference play, traveling to Southern California for a match against San Diego State on Friday, Sept. 8 at 10 p.m. (ET) and a contest against San Diego on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. (ET).
Loyola Chicago will make its first ever visit to The Vern on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 3 p.m. to open conference play. GW also hosts A-10 matches against Saint Louis (Oct. 4, 3 p.m.), St. Bonaventure (Oct. 7, 3 p.m.) and George Mason on Senior Day (Oct 28, 3 p.m.), and will travel to A-10 foes Davidson (Sept. 23, 1 p.m.), UMass (Sept. 30, 12 p.m.), Duquesne (Oct. 14, 7 p.m.) and LaSalle (Oct. 21, 7 p.m.).
The 2023 Atlantic 10 Championships will be played between Saturday, Nov. 4 and Saturday, Nov. 11, with matches to be played on the campuses of the matches' higher seeds.
