After guiding GW women's rowing to its first Atlantic 10 Championship in 2023 and a subsequent berth in the NCAA Championship, Head Coach Marci Robles has made the decision to step down from her role. After making her mark in the world of intercollegiate athletics as a student, mentor and coach, Robles will pursue other career interests.
"It's been a joy and an honor to have been part of the GW community," said Coach Robles. "I have loved my time here and want to thank Tanya Vogel and her team for taking a chance on me. I have so much love for these student-athletes and am immensely proud of them and all we've been able to accomplish, especially this past year. From the beginning, we've talked about empowerment and ownership, and to watch this team grow and learn how to fiercely believe in themselves has been rewarding beyond words. I'm so grateful to my assistant coaches, Maddie and Bridgid, our support staff, colleagues, alumni, parents, and everyone who's been a part of and believed in this team. I'm so fortunate that I got to spend my final coaching chapter here at home in DC and cannot wait to see what this team accomplishes next."
During Robles' historic tenure as head coach at GW, her program consistently displayed unwavering dedication and commitment in a relentless pursuit of excellence at the conference and national level. In 2023, after finishing second in the A-10 for the last three years, GW surged to the Championship, winning the Varsity 8 by nearly 13 seconds. Two weeks later at the national championship, all of GW's boats met or exceeded their projected seed. The Buff & Blue posted the best finish by place (20th) and total points (17) by an Atlantic 10 school since UMass in 2015, and topped local foe Navy as well as Jacksonville in the team field, tying the second-highest finish by an A-10 school at the national event all-time.
Robles' efforts earned her Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year honors, as well as CRCA Regional Coach of the Year accolades, while guiding a program that excelled in the classroom as well.
"While we will deeply miss Marci and who she is for the student-athletes she mentored, we're enormously grateful to her for leaving this proud program in a terrific place," said Athletics Director Tanya Vogel. "She has served as a role model for countless young women during her time at GW, instilling in them not only the competitive spirit to succeed on the water, but the life skills and thoughtful, passionate approach to living that will make them a success out of the boat. That is also what she will bring to the next group of people who she will serve."
A national search for Robles replacement will begin immediately.Â
