Softball Tops UMass, 7-2, Wins Series over Minutewomen

First-years make big impact in finale
AMHERST, Mass. - Behind another steady outing from first-year pitcher Rose Cano, GW softball won the series finale against UMass, 7-2, and clinched its second A-10 road series win of the season.Â
Cano picked up win No. 14 on the campaign in her 15th complete game of the year. The first-year allowed just two runs on seven hits and recorded five strikeouts in the finale. In her two starts over the weekend, Cano pitched 15.2 innings and allowed just four runs.
First-year Ashley Corpuz showed again that she can deliver in the big moments. The Ladera Ranch, Calif., native already has two walk-off home runs on the season, and while there was no walk-off needed in the finale, Corpuz insured the GW win today with a three-run single with the bases loaded in the seventh inning.
GW went down 1-0 early in the finale, but took the lead in the third inning and never gave it up. Maggie Greco drove in her fifth run of the series with an RBI double in the third, and moments later, GW took the lead with a sac fly from Cano.
Graduate student Arizona Ritchie added two RBIs of her own, including the eventual game-winner in the fifth. Ritchie singled home Reese Torres in the fifth inning for GW's third run and drove another run in on a fielder's choice in the seventh.Â
UMass held a 7-6 advantage in the hit department, but six walks drawn by GW batters gave the Buff and Blue enough action on the basepaths to score seven and clinch the series. Â
UP NEXT
GW returns to the GW Softball Field next weekend for the final series of the regular season, a three-game set against Fordham. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is set for 12 p.m. and all three games will be streamed on ESPN+.Â
