Softball Drops Both Games on Day One of Cavalier Clash

GW returns tomorrow for a 6 p.m. first pitch against UMES
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - GW softball wrapped up the first day of the Cavalier Clash, dropping games to both St. John's and Longwood. The Buff and Blue will regroup and play the third of five games this weekend tomorrow against UMES. First pitch has been moved from 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and the game can be tracked live using the live stats link on the online schedule.Â
St. John's 11, GW 0 (5 Innings):
The Colonials went up against the Red Storm from St. John's in the first Friday action of the Cavalier Clash, but it was the Red Storm who had GW's number today.
A bases-loaded walk in the first inning got the Red Storm on the board early, and more action in the second inning grew St. John's lead to three.Â
St. John's went on to score at least one run in every inning and started to pull away in the third. An Amy Mallah two-run blast was the catalyst, and two St. John's runs pushed the lead out to seven. The onslaught of runs would ultimately be too much for GW to handle as the game was called by way of the run rule in the fifth inning.
Longwood 7, GW 0:
After a quick turnaround between games, the Buff and Blue looked to bounce back against Longwood. The Lancers, however, had different plans in mind and took down GW, 7-0.Â
GW had its chances early on. Through three innings, the Colonials managed three baserunners while holding Longwood to just one. Neither team was able to plate a run and the game remained scoreless heading into the fourth inning, which is when Longwood took advantage.
The Lancers stepped on the gas with a pair of runs in the fourth inning, one run in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth inning. GW's early-game success getting runners aboard had dissipated, and the Lancers ended up getting the best of the Colonials.Â
