CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - In its third game at the Cavalier Clash, there was nothing cavalier with how the Buff and Blue approached its at-bats. A day after having the bats quieted in doubleheader action, GW swung early and often and threw up a crooked number in the top of the first, plating five to give first-year hurler Rose Cano (5-2) all the runs she'd need.
Back where it all started for grad student Arizona Ritchie, who transferred to GW after playing as an undergrad at UVA, the shortstop sensation got the game started with the first of her four base knocks on the day. Next to the plate, it was Cano who gave GDUB the early lead with a double to center. Cano then came around to score, along with fellow first-year and three-hole hitter Ashley Corpuz, on a Mia Parker two-RBI two-bagger, and while George Washington would go on to plate seven more in the five-inning contest, four batters into the game the club from D.C. had all the runs they'd need to pocket the win.
Abby Schaub drove in Parker with a double, and later scored on a Emma Fales' (another first-year from California) single, staking Cano to a 5-0 lead before she threw a pitch. The California rookie scattered five hits across the complete game, one-run effort, fanning three without walking a batter in her fifth win of the year.
At the plate, Ritchie continued her early-season assault on opposing pitching, in a 4-for-4 effort that included a double and two steals as the sparkplug atop the lineup. The Stafford, Va., native accounted for four of GW's 11 hits and three of her team's nine runs. Corpuz, Parker and Schaub each plated a pair.
The final day of the Cavalier Classic looms tomorrow, with Howard and Virginia on tap. The contest vs. the Bison begins at 1:30 p.m., followed by Ritchie getting her first look at her former club at 4 p.m. on ACCNX.Â
