LEWISBURG, Pa. - The George Washington water polo team fell in a wire-to-wire battle against Wagner, 15-14, on Friday evening in the opening round of the MAWPC Championship. GW will finish the MAWPC Championship in the consolation bracket, tomorrow against Johns Hopkins at 1:00 p.m. and Sunday against Mount St. Mary's at 9:00 a.m.
After surviving two early Wagner man advantages and playing nearly half of the first quarter scoreless, Andrija Sekulic cashed in on consecutive possessions to give the Revolutionaries an early 2-0 lead. Wagner answered with two goals of its own, and the first quarter finished tied 2-2.
The Revolutionaries went on a 3-0 run in the second quarter with goals from Mateus Stellet, Leo Lueddemann and Viktor Jovanovic, but a 2-1 Wagner advantage to end the quarter kept GW's lead at two at the break.
Wagner took its first lead of the game at 7-6 after going on a 3-0 run to open the third quarter, but GW stormed back and outscored the Seahawks, 6-3, the rest of the quarter to take a 12-10 lead into the final frame.
The teams traded goals to open the fourth quarter before Wagner strung together a two-goal run and tied the game at 14-14. Wagner regained the lead and scored the eventual game-winning goal on a 5-meter attempt with 1:24 remaining.
Sekulic finished with a team-high nine points via four goals and five assists, while Stellet matched with four goals of his own. Jovanovic (3), Lueddemann (2) and Kai De Orbeta (1) were responsible for GW's remaining tallies.
