Men Place Third, Women Eighth at XC23 Pre-Nationals

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – In preparation for championship season, the George Washington men's and women's cross country team competed in the XC23 Pre-Nationals hosted by the University of Virginia on Saturday morning. The event is a precursor to the NCAA Championships which will be hosted at the same course in November. Senior Kevin Conlon led the men's team with a PR time of 24:21.3 in the 8K, the second-fastest time in program history. The women were paced by sophomore Sarah Mitchell who also recorded a PR with a time of 21:03.1. Mitchell's time is the seventh-fastest 6K in program history.

NOTEWORTHY
- The men's team recorded a score of 113 to finish third out of 11 schools. UMass Lowell claimed the team title with a score of 49.
- Conlon's mark was just 10 seconds behind teammate Ryan Fowkes' program record time of 24:11.6 set in 2022.
- Right behind Conlon was sophomore Jacob Heredia, who tallied a 24:49.9, his fastest 8K time of the season. Heredia finished 20th out of the 125-runner field.
- Aside from Conlon, the men's team had six other runners set new PRs in the race. Those runners include sophomore Austin Brotemarkle (24:59.5), senior Pierce Kapustka (25:15.7), first-year Brayden Bayek (25:48.8), first-year Joe Fahrney (25:51.6), first-year Cole McCue (25:59.0), and first-year Henry Horne (26:28.5).
- The women's team recorded a score of 182 to finish eighth out of 15 programs. Kansas State won the event with a score of 116.
- Mitchell earned a ninth place finish out of 162 runners in the field.
- Behind Mitchell, a pair of Revolutionaries also set new PRs. First-year Julia Shanes recorded a time of 21:47.7 to finish 36th, while sophomore Una Boylan notched a 21:55.8 to earn 44th.
- Also recording a PR for GW was senior Claire McDonnell who finished 124th with a time of 23:08.2.
