Buff & Blue to play three games over the weekend
WASHINGTON - GW men's water polo returns to the pool this weekend for three games at the Princeton Invitational. The Buff & Blue will open play on Saturday against Cal Lutheran (8 a.m.) and #18 St. Francis Brooklyn (1 p.m.) before taking on Iona on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
ABOUT LAST WEEKEND: GW opened its season with three victories at the Navy Open, earning triumphs over Biola (15-9), Mt. San Antonio (21-5) and Salem (23-6). Newcomers headlined the weekend for the Colonials with Long Beach State transfer Theodoros Pateros earning MAWPC Player of the Week honors following his 15-goal, five-assist weekend. Michael Wheeler, a Georgetown transfer, provided nine goals and two assists.
Nick Schroeder, who was second on the team last year in points and goals, was second on the team last weekend with 13 total points behind six goals and seven assists.
IN THE POLLS: The Buff & Blue continue to receive votes in the CWPA national poll and will face a pair of ranked foes this weekend. Cal Lutheran is ranked #3 in the national Division III poll while St. Francis Brooklyn comes in 18th, marking the second ranked D-I program faced by GW this season (Princeton).
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: Cal Lutheran opened up its season at the Navy Open as well, going 2-2 with wins over Bucknell (13-12) and Johns Hopkins (17-11) and close setbacks to Navy (16-11) and Iona (14-13). Goalkeeper Bo DuBois made 22 saves over the weekend and earned SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors.
St. Francis Brooklyn went 2-2 in its first week of action at the Bruno Classic, defeating Air Force (15-13) and Gannon (23-12) while falling in battles to #5 Pacific (22-9) and #4 Stanford (26-10). The Terriers bested GW a year ago at the Princeton Invitational, 18-13, pulling away with five of the final six goals in the contest.
Iona opened its season with a 2-2 showing at the Navy Open, defeating Bucknell (5-0, forfeit) and Cal Lutheran (14-13) while falling to #1 California (23-7) and Mount St. Mary's (13-12 in OT). Luska Vlasic had a team-leading nine goals in the first four games while Mohamed Refaat had seven goals and five assists for a team-best 12 points.
