Water Polo Goes 3-1 at Navy Open

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - GW water polo opened its season with three wins in four games over the weekend at the Navy Open. After opening season with a tough battle against #11 Princeton, the Buff & Blue ran off three dominant victories against Biola, Mt. San Antonio and Salem.

- Theodoros Pateros, a graduate transfer from Long Beach State, paced the Buff & Blue attack with 15 goals and five assists. Pateros also drew a team-leading six exclusions.
- Pateros scored four goals in three of the matches and added a hat trick in the other.
- Michael Wheeler, another graduate transfer from Georgetown, scored nine times in his debut weekend with GW. After not scoring in the opener, Wheeler netted a hat trick and a four-goal game.
- Luca Castorina played the whole weekend in net and made 34 saves across the four matches. He also added five assists on the offensive end.
#11 Princeton 18, GW 10: The nationally-ranked Tigers started strong, scoring the game's first three goals before the Colonials' Andrija Sekulic got on the board.
Princeton led 6-2 after one, and maintained a four-goal edge Iate in the second quarter before the Buff & Blue cut the deficit in half with consecutive goals around intermission from Viktor Jovanovic and Nick Schroeder.
The Buff & Blue would get no closer though, as the Tigers scored seven times in the fourth quarter, including three times in the last four minutes.
Pateros, in his GW debut, led the way with three goals on six attempts and added an assist. Jovanovic converted on three of his four attempts to match his career-high and notch his third career hat trick.
GW 15, Biola 9: GW earned its first win of the season thanks to a hot start that saw it score six of the game's first seven goals in the opening six minutes. A pair of newcomers, Mateus Stellet and Wheeler, showcased their talents early in the game. Stellet scored back-to-back markers 36 seconds apart to open a 3-0 lead while Wheeler added consecutive goals later in the frame to make it 6-1.
Biola closed to within three at the break, but the Buff & Blue held the Eagles to just one goal in the third quarter to open up an 11-5 cushion.
Pateros scored two of his team-leading four goals in the fourth to finish off the victory. Wheeler and Stellet ultimately ended up with hat tricks while Sekulic scored twice in the victory.
GW 21, Mt. San Antonio 5: The Buff & Blue scored the first 10 goals of the match and cruised to a victory in Sunday's opener. Wheeler netted a hat trick in the first and ultimately scored four goals to follow up his Saturday performance.
Pateros continued his impressive debut weekend with four more goals, his third straight game with at least three tallies.
Leading 11-1 at the break, GW scored seven more times in the third quarter to move in front 18-3 heading into the final frame. Junior Kalan Smith notched his first career hat trick in the second half.
GW 23, Salem 6: GW completed a dominant Sunday sweep with the victory over the Tigers. After a nip-and-tuck opening quarter-plus, GW scored the final four goals of the second quarter to take a 10-5 lead at the break.
The Buff & Blue then exploded for an 8-0 third quarter to put the game away and ultimate scored 15 consecutive goals to take a 21-5 lead midway through the fourth quarter.
Pateros added four more goals for the third-straight contest and was joined by 11 different goal scorers. Junior Ford Bruggen notched his first career hat trick while first-year Peter Durkovic also netted a hat trick in his collegiate debut.
