Buff & Blue enter year with high hopes following strong 2021 campaign
WASHINGTON - George Washington cross country gets its season underway on Thursday afternoon, heading to Culpeper, Va., to face off with George Mason in the 2022 Battle of the Georges. The men's race is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start, followed by the women's race.
THE COMPETITION: GW is expected to compete against A-10 rival and host George Mason at the Harvest of Hope farm in Culpeper, Va. The men will be competing in a 7.7k, while the women will race in a 5k. This is the first iteration of the Battle of the Georges.
ABOUT LAST YEAR: The 2021 cross country campaign was a season of firsts for the GW women. George Washington started off last fall's campaign recording the program's first-ever perfect score at the Mount St. Mary's Duals, before closing out the year with the program's first A-10 Championship. GW was led by four All-Conference performers, including returning sophomore Olivia Syftestad.
On the men's side, GW recorded a seventh-place finish at the A-10 Championship. The Buff & Blue were led by the impressive individual efforts of senior James Glockenmeier, who recorded a fifth-place individual finish. Glockenmeier became GW's highest male finisher since 2015 and became the fourth Buff & Blue runner to place in the top five during an A-10 Championship.
PRESEASON POLLS: GW's women were projected to finish third in the preseason poll. The Buff & Blue led all teams with five first-place votes. However, they were selected third behind conference newcomer Loyola Chicago, who tallied 190 points, and Dayton, who received 186 points.
The GW men, who bring back Glockenmeier as well as 2020 All-Conference performer Ryan Fowkes, were projected to finish seventh this season.
