Three swimmers honored for excellence in classroom
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - After helping GW swimming and diving sweep the conference team titles, Marek Osina, Brendan Conley and Carly Perri have earned Atlantic 10 All-Academic honors.
Named A-10 Most Outstanding Performer after winning seven gold medals at the conference meet, Osina was recognized for his work in the classroom for the second straight season, while Conley and Perri were both honored on the conference's academic list for the first time.
It's the 12th consecutive season that GW has garnered multiple All-Academic selections.
Leading a dominant effort for the Buff and Blue men at the conference meet, Osina broke his own A-10 record in the 200 IM (1:44.72) and also collected gold in the 400 IM (3:46.40) and 200 back (1:42.22) in NCAA B-cut times. The senior from Kromeriz, Czech Republic, was part of four relay wins, as well, highlighted by a conference-record performance in the 200 medley relay (1:25.78).
A Business major, Osina was previously honored as an A-10 All-Academic pick and CSCAA Scholar All-American last season and carries a 3.67 cumulative GPA.
Conley did his part at the A-10 meet, scoring in a pair of individual events. The junior from Fort Thomas, Ky., placed seventh in the 1,650 free in 15:52.40 and also qualified for the B final of the 500 free in a season-best time of 4:33.24 before finishing 16th.
Conley has shined in the classroom as an International Affairs major, earning perfect 4.0s in each of the past two semesters to push his cumulative GPA to 3.96.
A graduate transfer via Duke, Perri made the most of her final season of collegiate competition to help the Buff and Blue women secure their second team title in three seasons. The Fountain Valley, Calif., native secured bronze in the 200 fly (2:00.99), finished fifth in the 200 free (1:49.55) and was part of a runner-up finish in the 800 free relay (7:15.95).
In the fall, Perri earned a 4.0 GPA in her first semester pursuing a master's degree in Organizational Leadership & Learning. While at Duke, she was named a 2018-19 CSCAA Scholar All-American and recognized on the ACC Academic Honor Roll four times.
With its tremendous showing at the A-10 Championships, GW had 22 student-athletes (12 men, 10 women) earn All-Conference honors this season, led by First Team performers Osina, Tyler Kawakami, Dylan Koo, Josh Legge, Djurdje Matic, Erin McCarthy, Karol Mlynarczyk, Philip Moldovanu, Connor Rodgers and Ethan Tulenko.
