Derek Ripp drives in Colonials' run
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -Â George Washington baseball was unable to contain the prolific St. Joe's offense on Friday, falling in the series opener, 11-1.
The Hawks capitalized on an early GW mistake to take control of Friday's game. A dropped ball in the outfield in the second led to four SJU runs. While starter Harrison Cohen was only charged with one earned run due to the miscue, St. Joe's ended the second up 4-0. As the game progressed, the Hawks continued to flex their offensive muscles. St. Joe's would score seven more times, including a three-run bomb from A-10 home run leader Andrew Cossetti, to cap off the victory.
The Colonials struggled to get the bats going, registering just three hits. Derek Ripp drove in the Buff & Blue's run with an RBI single in the sixth, while Tim Nicholson and Anthony Frechette also picked up base knocks.Â
On the mound, Hawks' starter Ian McCole threw six innings of one-run ball, and set five batters down on strikes. Meanwhile, Cohen allowed six runs (three earned)Â across six innings of work, while striking out six.Â
GW returns to the diamond tomorrow afternoon for game two against Saint Joseph's. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. with coverage available on ESPN+.Â
