Junior recognized as one of the nation's top shortstops
WASHINGTON - George Washington baseball shortstop Steve DiTomaso was named to the initial 2022 Brooks Wallace Award watch list, the College Baseball Foundation announced Tuesday. The award is given out annually to the nation's top shortstop.
DiTomaso has gotten off to a terrific start this season, compiling a .400/.447/.566 slash line along with 58 hits, 34 runs scored and 22 RBIs. Entering this week, DiTomaso ranked fourth in the NCAA in base knocks.
The award, which is sponsored by Mizuno, will be presented this summer by the College Baseball Foundation. It is named for former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace. Wallace died of leukemia at the age of 27. The award honors outstanding offense at the plate as much as it does defensive production at the shortstop position.
DiTomaso and GW return to action this weekend when they head to Philadelphia for a conference series against Saint Joseph's. Game one gets underway Friday at 3 p.m.
