Germer nets hat trick in home-opening victory
WASHINGTON – Powered by six second-half goals, GW lacrosse earned its first victory of the season with an 11-9 win in its home opener against American.
Amber Germer netted a hat trick in the victory and also led the squad with four shots on net. GW had seven different goal-scorers, with Emily Mowbray and Sophia Watkinson scoring two apiece. Mowbray also added two helpers to post a career-high four points. First-year Mia Caro made her first career start for GW and made eight saves in net behind a .471 save percentage.
The contest began as a back-and-forth affair that saw GW earn a 2-0 start before American came back to force two ties. After GW headed into the halftime break with a narrow 5-4 lead, the Buff & Blue built upon their cushion, outscoring American 3-1 in the opening 10 minutes of the third stanza. Three-straight Eagle goals knotted the contest at eight to head into the fourth. Mowbray and Alana Greene stopped the visitors' momentum, helping GW to a 10-9 advantage with four minutes left in regulation. A mere 12 seconds later, American's Maddy Spratt scored, cutting the GW lead to one. Mowbray then found senior captain Kendall Lambert who scored her first goal of the season. The Buff & Blue maintained possession in the final minute of play to cue its celebration on home turf.
