Davidson, N.C.- Despite claiming an early lead over the Davidson Wildcats on the road, the GW lacrosse team was halted, 15-8 by the 'Cats in its final road contest of the regular season.
The Buff & Blue kicked off the afternoon, notching two goals from first-year Sophia Levine and senior Everly Kessler. Davidson quickly responded to even the score within the first five minutes, leaving the rest of the opening frame quiet until just over a minute left on the clock when grad student Katie Fullowan found the back of the net off a free position opportunity, giving the GW Revs a one-goal advantage at the end of the first.
The 'Cats dominated the second, notching five goals to outscore GW by three going into the break. Fullowan and junior Grace Curry got on the board for the Buff & Blue to keep the conference contest within two at the half.
GW was silenced by the home team in the third while the 'Cats pulled away with three unanswered goals to bring the action into the final frame. The Revolutionaries added three in the final 15 off two from grad student Caroline Sullivan and one from Curry to keep the GW offense alive, but five goals from the Wildcats ultimately sealed the contest in favor of Davidson, 15-8.
In the loss, senior Katie Hipp scooped up three ground balls, and Fullowan caused two turnovers on the defensive side of the ball. In the draw circle, first-year Grace Gordon led with seven draw controls and senior Haley Bolton grabbed four to keep the draw even with Davidson at 13 draw controls apiece. First-year Gabi Greth also earned nine saves in the cage throughout the 60 minutes of action.
GW will now prepare for its final matchup of the regular season, playing host to St. Bonaventure at the Vern next Saturday at noon. The contest will also serve as the program's Senior Day, and the action can be streamed live on ESPN+.
