Chambliss becomes the third GW gymnast to earn the honor
WASHINGTON – George Washington gymnastics graduate student Deja Chambliss was named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Gymnast of the Year, the league announced after Saturday's championship meet.
Chambliss is just the third gymnast in GW gymnastics program history to take home the top honor, following Alex Zois (2019) and Cami Drouin-Allaire (2018 & 2016). As EAGL Championships were canceled in 2020, the award marks the eighth-straight season that a GW gymnast has won a major end-of-season EAGL award: Anna Warhol in 2021 (Scholar-Athlete of the Year), Drouin-Allaire in 2018 (Gymnast and Senior of the Year), Jillian Winstanley in 2017 (Scholar-Athlete of the Year), Drouin-Allaire in 2016 (Gymnast of the Year), Winstanley in 2015 (Rookie of the Year) and Chelsea Raineri in 2014 (Rookie of the Year). In addition, Chambliss tied Drouin-Allaire for the program record, earning EAGL Gymnast of the Week four times throughout the regular season.
Chambliss finished the 2022 regular season owning the top spot in the EAGL conference on vault (9.895 NQS) and floor (9.905 NQS). The Chesterfield, Va., native is tied for first in the all-around with a 39.240 NQS. Chambliss posted a 39.000+ in the all-around seven times this season, earning a career-high 39.600 on Feb. 20 at Pitt. Chambliss posted a perfect 9.950 on vault in GW's Pink Meet on Feb. 6. She tied her personal best, 9.850, on bars to place first in the all-around, one of four titles this season. The co-captain capped the regular season with a trio of All-EAGL First Team selections on vault, floor and all-around.
In addition to her EAGL rankings, Chambliss is ranked 25th in the country on vault, 43rd nationally on floor and 34th in the all-around.
Additionally, George Washington Athletics Director Tanya Vogel was named EAGL Administrator of the Year. "Tanya has been an outstanding supporter of EAGL Gymnastics," said Margie Foster-Cunningham. "She 100% promoted using the podium for our 2022 championships to help sponsor the event at its highest level. She continues to find ways to support women's gymnastics and our student-athletes."
