Chesterfield, Va., native earns the honor after career day on Sunday
STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – After a career-high day that helped GW gymnastics to a first-place and season-best finish on Sunday, Deja Chambliss has been named East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Co-Gymnast of the Week. Chambliss and Pittsburgh's Hallie Copperwheat share the honor in week five of the EAGL season.Â
Chambliss' career day was highlighted by a perfect 9.950 on vault, the maximum possible score for her Yurchenko full in GW's first rotation. The graduate student joins a list of just five gymnasts in program history who have achieved such a feat.Â
Chambliss placed first in the all-around with a career-high 39.425 behind event scores of 9.850 on bars, 9.750 on beam and a 9.875 on floor. The all-around title is her third this season, and she also topped the podium with her meet-leading floor score.Â
At last Wednesday's tri-meet at Towson, the Chesterfield, Va., native led GW on vault and tied for first overall with a 9.825. Chambliss added a 9.850 on floor, tying for second on the team and third overall. Â
Chambliss currently leads the league in the all-around, averaging a 39.181, and is 36th on vault among all Division I gymnasts with a 9.865 average. The honor is the second weekly award for Chambliss this season and the third of her career.Â
For her efforts in GW's pair of meets, Chambliss has also been tabbed GWsports.com Colonial of the Week.Â
The team looks ahead to a dual meet at No. 2 Oklahoma on Friday at 7:45 p.m. (EST).Â
