Colonials roll to first Power 5 victory in six years
WASHINGTON - In the first visit from a Power 5 school for GW men's basketball in five years, the Buff and Blue with George's Army behind them came more than ready for battle. Forty raucous and hard-fought minutes of action later, the rowdy student section did not leave disappointed after a dominating, 79-55, thrashing of South Carolina.
No stranger to Power 5 competition, GW's James Bishop IV (via the SEC), Ricky Lindo Jr. and Amir Harris (via the Big 10), Maximus Edwards (via the Big 12), and Brendan Adams, though he played Big East ball saw his share of Power 5 competition at UConn, had the home team seize the national TV spotlight and ran to a wire-to-wire win, to the delight of the university's students who were packed to the rafters.
A balanced offensive effort saw GW balloon its lead to 35 at its largest, while a standout defensive game plan harassed the Gamecocks and prized 17-year-old recruit GG Jackson into a frustrating night at the floor. South Carolina shot just .323 (21-of-65) and Jackson connected on just 4-of-17 tries, as from the jump the crowd was a menacing Sixth Man.
Presented pregame with a ceremonial ball from his 1,000th career point scored last game, Bishop kept it going with game-highs of 24 points and eight rebounds, while Adams, the reigning A-10 Player of the Week, was just behind his Baltimore brother with 18 of his own. The pair combined to drain nine threes as part of a team effort that torched the nets to the tune of 12-of-27 (.444) from long range, while seamlessly and unselfishly moving the ball and racking up 21 assists on 30 made field goals.
Lindo, meanwhile, was the best forward on the floor, with his 15 points and six rebounds in an efficient 6-of-8 shooting performance.
Next up for GW is a road test at Radford on Sunday afternoon. Tip time from the Virginia school is 2 p.m. on ESPN+
Foggy Bottom's next chance to catch the boys in Buff and Blue comes on Saturday, December 10 against the red-hot American Eagles, who recently knocked off Georgetown. Tip-off on the 10th is 4 p.m, airing live on ESPN+.
