Matic claimed 11th of 60 in top-event
WASHINGTON - Djurdje Matic is in his second season swimming for the Buff and Blue and has already built up an abundance of accolades. In Matic's first season, he captured six GW records and two A-10 records and was named to the A-10 All-Conference First Team. This past week, Matic added to his impressive list of accolades when he swam in three events at the 2022 FINA Swimming World Cup.
The final leg of the 2022 FINA Swimming World Cup was held in Indianapolis on November 3-5, and featured some of the top competition in the world
"Katie Ledecky broke the short course world record in the 1500m free at a World Cup event in Toronto - that's a little indication of the level of swimming," remarked GW Swimming and Diving Head Coach Brian Thomas.
Matic did well in all three events in Indianapolis. He finished the 100m butterfly in 51.71, tied for 19th of 57 in the event, and completed the 100m freestyle in a 49.86, which got him 42nd of 74. Matic saved his best for last, clocking in a 23.19 in the 50m butterfly on Saturday, a new personal best, and placing 11th of 60 in the event.
"It really means a lot," Matic responded when asked about the significance of representing Serbia. "Representing my country is the biggest goal I have for swimming. It is the pinnacle," he added.
Coach Thomas was right alongside Matic at the World Cup, representing Serbia as a coach. "I'm really grateful for him," Matic said. "We can see the results of the work we put in together."
"The FINA World Cup circuit is a target for some of the world's best swimmers," Coach Thomas added. "The idea is to continue Djurdje's development on a world stage."
