Buff and Blue go 3-0 over the weekend
WASHINGTON - #19 GW water polo (20-5, 13-1) added three more MAWPC wins to its resume this weekend when it took down Navy, Johns Hopkins and Mount St. Mary's.
GW 12, Navy 11 (OT):Â
GW met with Navy for the second time this season and the teams played another tightly contested match. It was a back and forth game throughout, and with both teams packing in their defenses, shots were being fired from distance. GW led by one at the half, but Navy took the lead at the start of the third quarter. The Colonials wouldn't be silenced for long, going on a 4-0 streak to take back control of the game and lead by two going into the fourth quarter.
With time winding down in regulation and the game tied, both teams had quality opportunities to score the game-winner, but both goalkeepers came up with timely saves to force the game into overtime.Â
In overtime, Luca Castorina came up with big stops to keep the Midshipmen off the board, and GW was able to net one past the Navy goalkeeper to give the Colonials the season sweep of the Midshipmen. The win was a team effort for GW, with no player scoring more than two goals.
GW 23, Johns Hopkins 8:Â
GW hopped out to an early 4-0 lead against Johns Hopkins and led by four goals after one quarter. The Blue Jays battled back in the second quarter and cut the lead down to three at halftime. GW shined in the third quarter, scoring three quick goals out of halftime and never looking back. The Colonials outscored the Blue Jays 15-3 in the second half, while the game was highlighted by a seven-goal output from Theodoros Pateros.Â
GW 13, Mount St. Mary's 12:
GW downed Mount St. Mary's, 13-12, in a game that came down to the wire. Though it was tight late, early on was all GW, with the home team going up 6-2 and scoring goals in quick succession. The first quarter was highlighted by Theodoros Pateros scoring his 100th goal of the season. Mount St. Mary's did not stay down for long as it rattled off four unanswered in the second quarter to cut the lead down to one at halftime.Â
GW opened the second half just as it did the first, rattling off two quick goals to push the lead back out to three. The Mountaineers battled back, and with under a minute to play the game was tied. On GW's final offensive possession, the Colonials snuck a pass to Viktor Jovanovic on the inside, who fought through multiple Mountaineer defenders and fired the eventual game-winning shot past the goalkeeper. The Mountaineers had a chance to retaliate, but they couldn't get a shot off in the final seconds.Â
Up Next:Â
GW will finish off the regular season with a pair of home games next weekend. The Buff and Blue will play Johns Hopkins on Friday night (7 p.m.) at Long Bridge Park in Arlington, Va., followed by Senior Day on Saturday (12 p.m.) when the Colonials meet with Fordham at the Charles E. Smith Center.Â
