Cross Country heads to Mechanicsville, Va. this weekend with title hopes in hand
WASHINGTON -Â George Washington cross country will look to make its title hopes a reality when it takes part in the A-10 Championship this weekend at Polo Green Park in Mechanicsville, Va. The women will start things off with the 5k race at 10 a.m., followed by the men's 5-mile race at 10:50 a.m.
LAST TIME OUT:
In its final tune-up, GW put together a strong performance at the ECU Invitational. On the men's side, Ryan Fowkes smashed the Buff & Blue's all-time mark in the men's 8K, finishing in a time of 24:18.21. Additionally, GW had three runners finish in the top 10 on the way to a first-place team finish.
Meanwhile, the women's program recorded a third-place team finish and had four runners finish in the top 20.
ABOUT LAST YEAR:Â The 2021 A-10 Championship was one to remember for GW women's cross country, who captured its first A-10 title. Anchored by three top 10 finishes, the women's team captured the championship with 50 points, finishing 25 points better than the next closest team. For the first time in program history, the GW women had four All-Conference honorees, including current sophomore Olivia Syftestad.
On the men's side, GW tallied a seventh overall team finish behind James Glockenmeier's fifth-place individual finish. Glockenmeier became GW's highest male finisher since 2015 and was just the fourth Buff & Blue male runner to place in the top five during an A-10 Championship.
RETURNING TO POLO GREEN PARK:
Saturday will mark GW cross country's first visit to Polo Green Park since March of 2021, when it also competed at the A-10 Championship. That year, both the men's and women's teams finished in the top five at an A-10 Championship for the first time in program history. Fowkes took home All-Conference honors that year, placing 15th in a then-personal best time of 24:56.0.Â
