Colonials round out non-conference play with pair of road matches
WASHINGTON - GW women's soccer will finish out its non-conference play this week, taking the trip to Towson on Thursday at 7 p.m. before squaring off at Penn on Sunday at 4 p.m.
ABOUT LAST WEEK: The Colonials dropped a pair of matches against local foes, falling at Maryland, 3-1, and at home against American, 2-0. In her first start with the Buff & Blue, Sophia Danyko-Kulchycky gave GW an early 1-0 lead at Maryland. She continues to pace GW with nine shots on target so far this year.
MORE ON SOPHIA: Danyko-Kulchycky has stepped up offensively in her first year with the Buff & Blue after transferring from UConn. Her 1.8 shots on goal per game rank third in the A-10, while she is second in the circuit in shot accuracy with 64% of her attempts (9 of 14) being put on net. She is second on the team with three points, trailing only Sammy Neyman.
CREATING CHANCES: Sunday's setback with American wasn't due to the lack of opportunity for GW, as the Colonials rifled off a season-high 21 shots, including nine on net. The Buff & Blue have now put at least seven shots on target in three games this year and rank sixth in the A-10 with an average of 5.67 per contest.
ABOUT TOWSON: The Tigers enter play on Thursday at 3-1-2 on the year and unbeaten in their last three games following a 3-2 golden goal win over Mount St. Mary's on Sunday. Nia Christopher has scored six goals on the season, including a hat trick against the Mountaineers last time out. GW is 6-2-1 against Towson all-time and earned a 2-1 win in the spring season.
ABOUT PENN: The Quakers are 2-1-1 on the young year and will travel to face Maryland on Thursday before hosting GW. Penn was unbeaten in its first three matches of the season before falling at #25 Hofstra on Sunday. Lauren Teuschl paces Penn with six points (2g, 2a) through four games. Sunday marks the first meeting in program history between the two schools.
