Buff and Blue visit Fordham on Saturday
GW men's soccer heads to the Bronx on Saturday afternoon for a rematch of last spring's Atlantic 10 Championship final vs. Fordham.
The Rams claimed a 2-0 win on April 12 at Dayton's Baujan Field to clinch the conference title and an automatic NCAA Tournament berth.
LAST TIME OUT: In non-conference action on Wednesday, GW kept the pressure on Mount St. Mary's with a 21-3 advantage in total shots, but the Mountaineers scored in the 59th minute and held on for a 1-0 win.
HISTORY WATCH: Oscar Haynes Brown entered at halftime vs. Mount St. Mary's and ended up tallying a team-high five shots over the final 45 minutes.
The two-time All-Conference forward from London, England, leads the squad with three goals this season, leaving him on the cusp of breaking onto the program's all-time top 10 scoring list.
With 25 goals in 41 career games, Haynes Brown is two scores away from tying Orville Reynolds ('84-87), Kenny Emson ('85-88) and Marcelo Valencia ('91-94) for 10th in program history. The who's who list of the best goal scorers ever to don the Buff and Blue has been unchanged since Seth Rudolph's career ended in 2012.
GOING DEEP: Tiago Carvalho and Tobias Williams earned their first starts of the season on Wednesday at Mount St. Mary's. In all, 21 different student-athletes have made at least one start for GW through eight games.
Justin Grady, Ryan Cedeno and Josh Yurasits are the lone members of the Buff and Blue to crack the starting lineup in every contest.
SCOUTING THE RAMS: Tabbed the preseason A-10 favorite on the heels of its conference title, Fordham has been tested this fall and sits at 2-5-1 overall. The Rams began their A-10 slate by earning a 2-1 victory at La Salle last Saturday with Jack Sluys providing the game-winning goal in the 65th minute.
In last spring's matchup with an A-10 title on the line, Fordham netted a goal in each half to claim the high-stakes victory. All 17 student-athletes who saw action for GW in that one remain on the roster.
UP NEXT: GW is back on the Mount Vernon Campus for a pair of home games next week. The Buff and Blue host James Madison on Tuesday at 2 p.m. before welcoming Saint Joseph's on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
