Brummet helped FC Baltimore Christos advance to NPSL national semifinals
After helping GW men's soccer advance to its first Atlantic 10 Championship final since 2011 last spring, Matthew Brummet spent the summer playing with his hometown FC Baltimore Christos of the National Premier Soccer League. The club went 8-0-2 during the regular season before capturing Mid-Atlantic Conference and East Region titles to reach the national semifinals, where its run ended with a 1-0 loss to Tulsa Athletic on July 31.
GWsports.com caught up with the graduate student midfielder to find out more about his summer on the pitch as fall training begins for the Buff and Blue, who open their regular season on Aug. 26 vs. VMI at GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
How did you get this opportunity with FC Baltimore Christos?
I have been playing with Christos for the past 3-4 years now and have established myself within the club and organization. I was grateful to them for having me back on the team to be able to take part in this memorable season, a run that fell just one game short of the NPSL national final.
What did you hope to bring to the group?
Going into the season, I was looking to bring energy, quality, determination, leadership and experience. With that being said, I played a key role within the team, whether that was starting or coming off the bench.
Each game I knew it was my job to make a difference, and I managed to finish the year with three goals and three assists within a very competitive NPSL league.
Why do you think this group was so successful?
What made this team so special is that it was a mixture of top Division I soccer players from all over the country and players who have played at the highest level beyond college who came together and made each other better.
We have all known each other for years and grew up together so holding each other accountable and pushing each other to be better was never a problem.
What were your favorite memories from the run?
Two of my favorite memories were playing against the first division Costa Rican side Alajuelense and winning the NPSL regular season, division and regional championships.
Having these experiences to grow and better myself while winning trophies with an incredible group has left a lasting impression and impact on my soccer career.
What did it mean to you to represent your hometown on the national stage?
Being on the national stage with my hometown team playing in front of family and friends was an incredible experience. To do it with players that I grew up with was even more amazing. It's special knowing the lasting impact we made on the community by inspiring the next generation of soccer players to do the same.
How do you build off such a successful summer coming back to GW?
This summer season has helped me mature as a player allowing me to continue to learn and grow within the game. Learning from players with experience at the highest levels helped me refine my game and make adjustments to keep improving.
As an upperclassman, I am looking to bring the same quality, experience and leadership to our GW team. I am extremely excited to get back to work this fall and can't wait to bring a championship back to D.C.
