One of newest Colonials tabbed for country's debut entry
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball junior Nya Lok will compete on the international stage next week, suiting up for South Sudan at the FIBA Women's AfroBasket 2021 Zone 5 Qualifiers. The event, scheduled for July 12-17, features the hosts Rwanda, Egypt, Kenya and Uganda.
Lok, who transferred to GW from Midland College earlier this year, recently took part in a week-long training camp in Sacramento, Calif., at the practice facility of the NBA's Sacramento Kings. She will now travel to Kigali, Rwanda, where she will bear the flag of South Sudan for the country's debut in the biennial international competition.
Lok was born at a refugee camp in Ethiopia after her South Sudanese parents fled the country due to war before being raised in Melbourne, Australia. The Republic of South Sudan gained independence in 2011 and has been a member of FIBA since 2013. The sport has grown rapidly in the country thanks to iconic NBA players such as Manute Bol and Luol Deng, as well as the first-ever WNBA player in Adut Bulgak.
Lok is coming off a All-Conference First Team season during her sophomore campaign in which she averaged 14.2 ppg, 7.2 rpg and 2.4 apg for Midland. She registered double figures in 13 of 17 games, shooting 46.4% from the floor and 38.8% from beyond the arc.
The winner of this qualifier will earn a spot in the FIBA Women's AfroBasket 2021, set for September 17-26 in Yaounde, Cameroon. A full schedule has yet to be announced.
