Kawakami, Mlynarczyk, Osina, Pone Recognized
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Karol Mlynarczyk, Emils Pone, Marek Osina and Tyler Kawakami of GW swimming and diving have been honored as CSCAA Scholar All-Americans in recognition of their athletic and academic excellence.
The four Colonials landed second-team distinction for earning a GPA of 3.50 or better and also recording at least one NCAA B-cut swim this spring.
Kawakami, Mlynarczyk, Osina and Pone were key contributors in the Buff and Blue's dominant push to their fourth Atlantic 10 title in five seasons, each totaling six medals at the conference meet in April. They teamed up on a pair of record relays that week with their 400 medley relay time of 3:10.28 setting a conference mark and ranking 33rd in the country for the season.
Pone picked up his third Scholar All-America recognition from the CSCAA, while Mlynarczyk, Osina and Kawakami landed on the list for the first time.
It's the fifth consecutive season that multiple members of the program have received individual academic recognition from the national organization.
"To be named a Scholar All-American is an honor that really represents the vision that we have for GW Swimming and Diving," Head Coach Brian Thomas said. "We want to be a destination for student-athletes that refuse to sacrifice on either end - academically or athletically. Our Scholar All-American award winners are probably the most visible display of discipline and excellence that I can think of.
"They consistently set themselves apart in the pool while also setting themselves up for successful and fulfilling careers in the workforce. I'm fortunate enough to see all of the hard work that goes into balancing elite athletics with elite academics, and success at this level is never achieved by chance - these student-athletes earned it and we're very proud."
Mlynarczyk made a historic debut at the A-10 Championships, sweeping Most Outstanding Performer and Most Outstanding Rookie Performer honors after earning six golds over four days.
The first-year out of Warsaw, Poland, claimed individual gold in the 100 back (:46.22), 200 back (1:43.04) and 100 fly (:47.26) and also posted a 100 back time of 46.03 seconds to lead off the 400 medley relay that would've been good enough to earn an invite to the NCAA Championship. A Business major who compiled a 3.52 GPA during the spring semester, he also set program marks in the 50 free (:19.96) and 100 free (:43.66) as part of relay victories.
Pone closed out his decorated run in Buff and Blue by winning six medals, including five golds, at the conference meet, highlighted by record swims in the 200 fly (1:45.19) and 400 IM (3:46.32). With that performance, the Jurmala, Latvia, native finished his collegiate career with 15 total A-10 medals to help the program win its first four conference team titles.
Pone was recently named the GW Athletics J. Dallas Shirley Outstanding Senior Male Student-Athlete and an A-10 All-Academic pick for the third time. He earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in Finance during his time in Foggy Bottom and finished with a 3.88 cumulative GPA.
A transfer from East Carolina, Osina made a strong debut at the A-10 meet, setting a conference record in the 200 IM (1:45.18). The junior from Kromeriz, Czech Republic, also won individual gold in the 200 breast (1:56.93) and finished runner-up in the 400 IM (3:49.30). Also an A-10 All-Academic selection, he compiled a 3.86 GPA for the spring as a Business major.
Kawakami hit the NCAA B-cut mark with his runner-up swim in the 100 breast in a personal-best time of 54.00 seconds, and the sophomore from Honolulu, Hawaii, also won individual gold in the 50 free (:19.97) and 100 free (:44.40). The Pre-Business Administration major compiled a 3.56 GPA this spring and owns a 3.53 cumulative mark.
