A four-year member of GW swimming and diving, Ensign Nick Tomczyk was commissioned into the U.S. Navy in a morning ceremony at the U.S. Navy Memorial on May 21.
While representing the Buff and Blue, the Reading Pa., native took on the additional challenge of training to become a Naval officer through the GW NROTC program.
Tomczyk thrived athletically and academically amid that busy schedule. The diver scored on both boards at the Atlantic 10 meet all four years, garnering important points to help the Buff and Blue secure team titles in 2018, 2019 and 2021. He graduated earlier this month with a degree in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Aerospace and a minor in Naval Science.
On June 14, Tomczyk will report to flight school in Pensacola, Fla., with the hopes of eventually flying the F-35 fighter jet.

Tomczyk shared these thoughts with GWsports.com on his GW journey and how it has prepared him for the road ahead:
"My time at GW, both with the dive team and in NROTC, has prepared me for my career in the Navy more than I could have imagined.
Throughout my four years in D.C., I have learned to overcome obstacles and face challenges head on, skills I know that I'll need in the fleet. More importantly, I learned how important it is to be a part of a team and work towards a common goal.
Although the challenges I'll face in the Navy will be different than the ones on the pool deck, the dive team has instilled in me a fundamental understanding that teamwork is the best way to achieve any objective.
I will always cherish the lessons I've learned and the family I found in the Smith Center, without them I wouldn't be where I am today. Raise High and Go Navy!"
