Gymnastics Heads to Towson for Pair of Meets

GW will close out the regular season with meets on Friday and Sunday
WASHINGTON – The George Washington gymnastics team will travel to Towson on Friday for a 6 p.m. tri-meet with Temple. GW will make the trip back to Towson on Sunday and close out its regular season with a quad-meet against Temple and New Hampshire. Sunday's meet is scheduled for 4 p.m.
WHAT A WEEKEND
On March 5, GW earned a first place finish at Temple posting a season-high 195.700. The team earned its first score above the 49.000 mark on floor for the first time this season, finishing with a 49.075. Junior Deja Chambliss posted a career-high 9.850 on bars and tied her career-high 9.900 on vault to earn her first overall on the event. Cydney Crasa and Olivia Zona earned first overall on floor.
The Buff and Blue once again topped the podium on Sunday, edging Towson 195.675 - 195.050. GW earned its 195.675 behind team scores of 48.850 on vault, 48.925 on bars, a season-high 49.000 on beam and 48.900 on floor. Rachel Kaplan recorded a career-high 9.850 on bars while Whitman and Katherine Shek registered career-highs on beam earning a 9.825 and a 9.775, respectively. Crasa placed first overall on floor for the second consecutive time after her 9.825 performance.
Following GW's pair of meets, Whitman was named EAGL Rookie of the Week for the second time this season.
FAMILIAR FOES
This weekend's pair of meets will mark the third time GW competes against Towson, the second time against Temple and the first against New Hampshire.
Ariana Castrence of Temple and Emerson Hurst of Towson were the other two winners in the league's most recent weekly awards. Over the Owl's two meets, Castrence's two all-around scores were good enough for a program record. Castrence registered scores 9.800 or better in all eight of her routines. Hurst posted a 9.975 on beam, the highest beam score in program history. Hurst made her season debut on floor, earning a 9.800 to lead Towson on the event.
New Hampshire is coming off a win at home against N.C. State 196.125 - 195.850. The win marked UNH's highest score since March 8, 2019. UNH was led by sophomore Robyn Kelley and junior Hailey Lui who combined for four different 9.900 scores on Saturday.
THE ROAD AHEAD
Pittsburgh will host the 2021 EAGL Championships on March 20. The championship will feature two quad-meet sessions, with the first session at 1 p.m. and the second at 7 p.m. Session designation will be determined based on final conference standings following the completion of the regular season. Both sessions will be streamed live on ESPN3.
