GW is coming off a 2019 A-10 Championship appearance
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The George Washington women's soccer team landed second in the A-10 preseason poll, the conference announced today.
GW tallied 171 points to earn their spot just behind 2019 A-10 champion Saint Louis, based off of ranking projections from the head coaches of the 14 A-10 competitors.
The GW women's soccer team is coming off an Atlantic 10 final appearance, its first since 1997. The Buff and Blue knocked off Saint Joseph's and Massachusetts, but ultimately fell to Saint Louis, 3-1, in the conference final. The team finished the 2019 season with a 14-3-4 overall record, 7-1-2 in conference play. GW also earned six Atlantic 10 postseason honors.
The Buff and Blue return 18 student-athletes from last season's roster and add four newcomers. Redshirt junior Rachel Sorkenn is among those returning after pacing the 2019 squad with 27 points on 11 goals and five assists. She recorded five of her eight goals in A-10 action and also led the team with four game-winning goals. Midfielder Maria Pareja finished her sophomore campaign with six goals and four assists, with four game-winning scores.
Defensive standout Hannah Zaluski enters her junior season coming off her second postseason honor. After being the only first-year student athlete to start all 19 contests in her first season, Zaluski held onto her starting spot in 2019 and was a key contributor on GW's back line. Zaluski earned A-10 Second Team honors, ranking third on the team with 1,942 minutes played and first among defenders. Zaluski was also called up to the U.S. U-20 Women's National Training Camp during the offseason.
Redshirt sophomore Tamaki Machi returns to the net after earning Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team honors, starting all 21 games for the Buff and Blue in 2019. She finished the regular season with 77 saves and a 1.12 GAA, a mark that ranked fourth in the A-10. She secured five shutouts on the season, four of which came in A-10 play.
Four teams will advance to this spring's A-10 Championship, which is slated to be held April 15-17 and hosted by the top seed. A finalized schedule will be released soon on GWsports.com.
