Women’s Soccer Opens Season at Georgetown on Sunday

GW tabbed No. 2 in A-10 preseason poll
WASHINGTON- GW women's soccer is set to start its spring 2021 season with a trip to Georgetown on Sunday for a 1 p.m. contest.
GW is coming off an Atlantic 10 final appearance, its first since 1997. The Buff and Blue knocked off Saint Joseph's and Massachusetts, but ultimately fell to Saint Louis, 3-1, in the conference final. The team finished the 2019 season with a 14-3-4 overall record, 7-1-2 in conference play. GW also earned six Atlantic 10 postseason honors.
The Buff and Blue return 18 student-athletes from last season's roster and add four newcomers.
ON THE ATTACK: Redshirt junior Rachel Sorkenn is among those returning after pacing the 2019 squad with 27 points on 11 goals and five assists. She recorded five of her eight goals in A-10 action and also led the team with four game-winning goals. Isabella Buck also returns on the attack after appearing in three games in 2019. Newcomers Anika Haski and Lauren Prentice round out the front line for the Buff and Blue.
MIDFIELD MAKEUP: Midfielder Maria Pareja finished her sophomore campaign with six goals and four assists, with four game-winning scores. Captain Kelly Amador returns for her senior season after recording a career-high three goals across 21 contests. Senior Natalie Silberman saw action in 17 games last season, logging 969 minutes on the pitch. Isabelle Eskay will be another familiar face at midfield after her freshman campaign that consisted of two goals and one assist across 18 games played. Tori Minda also returns at midfield after seeing action in 14 games and recording four assists in her debut season.
DOMINANT DEFENSE: Defensive standout Hannah Zaluski enters her junior season coming off her second postseason honor. After being the only first-year student-athlete to start all 19 contests in her first season, Zaluski held onto her starting spot in 2019 and was a key contributor on GW's back line. Zaluski earned A-10 Second Team honors, ranking third on the team with 1,942 minutes played and first among defenders. Zaluski was also called up to the U.S. U-20 Women's National Training Camp during the offseason.
Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team honoree Madi Coyne returns after starting all 21 contents for GW last season. Coyne also ranked fifth on the squad with a career-high eight points on four goals.
IN NET: Redshirt sophomore Tamaki Machi returns to the net after earning Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team honors, starting all 21 games for the Buff and Blue in 2019. She finished the regular season with 77 saves and a 1.12 GAA, a mark that ranked fourth in the A-10. She secured five shutouts on the season, four of which came in A-10 play.
A LOOK AT THE HOYAS: Georgetown kicked off its season on Thursday topping George Mason, 2-0. The Hoyas earned the top spot for the fifth straight year in the BIG EAST preseason poll. Defender Jenna Royson was named the BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Georgetown finished the 2019 season 13-5-3 overall, capped off by a trip to the conference championship, falling to Xavier 2-0.
