Matic, Perri, Rodgers & Smyers Honored After Big Al Invite
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - After a strong weekend at the Big Al Invitational, GW swimming and diving has swept the Atlantic 10 weekly awards.
Durde Matic and Carly Perri received A-10 Performer of the Week honors, while Connor Rodgers and Molly Smyers landed the conference's Rookie Performer of the Week awards.
Matic had a hand in breaking three A-10 records at the three-day meet, highlighted by a win in the 100 fly in an all-time conference-best time of 45.72 seconds that ranks No. 15 nationally this season.
The junior from Belgrade, Serbia, was also part of conference-record efforts in the 200 medley relay (1:26.91) and 400 medley relay (3:09.40). He placed fourth in the 200 fly in an NCAA B-cut time of 1:46.34 and scored in the 50 free with a top time of 20.32 seconds that ranks fifth in program history.
It's Matic's second Performer of the Week award of the fall after also being honored on Nov. 10 following the dual meet at Pitt.
Perri qualified for championship finals in all three of her individual events and clocked times that rank among the program's all-time top 10 in each.
The graduate student's top finish was a third-place showing in the 200 free (1:49.57), and she also placed fourth in the 200 fly (2:01.92) and eighth in the 500 free (4:55.26) vs. tough competition. She was part of GW's top team in four different relays as well, including a runner-up finish in the 800 free relay (7:23.89).
It's the first A-10 weekly honor for Perri, who joined the Buff and Blue this semester after four seasons at Duke.
Smyers posted strong swims in five different individual events at Princeton with three times that rank among the program's all-time top 10.
The first-year from Allison Park, Pa., qualified for the championship final in the 400 IM (4:23.48) and 200 fly (2:03.50) and also placed ninth in both the 500 free (4:56.50) and 1,650 free (17:06.04), plus a strong prelims swim in the 200 IM (2:05.43).
Rodgers was responsible for a pair of new entries on the program's all-time top 10 list last weekend. The rookie from Carmel, Calif., clocked a time of 3:55.41 in the 400 IM on the way to an 11th-place finish and also finished the 200 fly in 1:50.58 while placing 12th. He swam the 500 free in 4:36.92, as well.
In a testament to the program's talented group of newcomers, Rodgers and Smyers became the third and fourth different winners of the rookie award this fall, joining Bode Ringenbach and Philip Moldovanu.
In total at the meet, GW set three A-10 records, posted six individual NCAA B-cut times and added 23 new entries from 13 different swimmers into its all-time top 10.
