In August 2019, the GW community mourned the sudden and tragic loss of alumna Alex de Moura, CCAS BA '17, in a swimming accident in Mexico. At GW, Alex was an exceptional gymnast and student. As team captain, she was not only admired for her drive and leadership, but also for her positivity and joy.
After Alex's passing, her family, friends, and the GW community rallied together to ensure her legacy would never be forgotten through the creation of the Alexandra Vittoria de Moura Memorial Scholarship. Alex's parents, Alexandre, CCAS BA '84, and Josephine de Moura are proud of all she achieved in her short lifetime and hope the scholarship will make a positive impact for generations to come. "It is our fervent wish that the scholarship be awarded to someone who most closely resembles the skills and talents of our daughter, Alexandra. Someone who has leadership, humility, dedication, commitment, work ethic, and character. This scholarship is a wonderful way to perpetuate her legacy!"
In that spirit, the 2020-2021 inaugural Alexandra Vittoria de Moura Memorial Scholarship is awarded to junior Olivia Zona. Olivia is a junior and an Exercise Science major who represented the Colonials on the EAGL All-Scholastic Team in both of her first two seasons at GW.
"Zona competes every day with the same drive for success in everything that she does just like Alex did," said head coach Margie Forster-Cunningham. "Her love for her teammates and pride in representing our worldwide family of alumnae is special. Zona has seen her greatest gymnastics success on the balance beam, just like Alex who was a picture of elegance, grace and power."
