Elena Shelepak drove in five in victory
WASHINGTONÂ - Elena Shelepak equaled a career high with five RBIs and Kaitlin Buff tossed her first career shutout as GW softball rolled to a 9-0 win over Morgan State in five innings on Saturday afternoon.
The Colonials scored four times in the third and added five more in the fourth to earn the run-rule victory on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The bottom of GW's batting order started both rallies. Maggie Greco and Darbie Stancil reached base to lead off the third before Jenna Cone's RBI single plated the first run of the game. Shelepak came up clutch three batters later, slicing an opposite-field double with the bases loaded to make it 4-0.
A Greco single ignited the Colonials in the fourth, as well. The Buff and Blue turned two hits, two walks and three Morgan State errors into five runs. Shelepak supplied another clutch hit with a two-out, two-run single into right center that extended the lead to 8-0.
Meanwhile, Buff turned in a gem, allowing just three hits and a walk over five innings to blank the Bears. The senior from California tallied three strikeouts in earning her first win of the season. She capped her shutout with a 1-2-3 fifth inning.
Offensively, GW kept the pressure on Morgan State, scoring its nine runs on just five total hits. The Colonials walked five times and stole three bases.
Shelepak reached in all three of her plate appearances via a single, double and a walk as she matched her career-best RBI total set in March 2018 vs. Princeton. The senior from New York now leads the Colonials with 11 RBIs on the season.
A first-year from Illinois, Greco tallied her first career multi-hit game and scored twice, while Stancil and Alessandra Ponce also scored two runs apiece.
Cone went 1-for-2 with a walk and the RBI single to boost her team-leading batting average to .354.
ON DECK: GW closes the Colonial Classic with a Sunday doubleheader at the Vern. The Buff and Blue will meet Princeton at 9 a.m. before facing Georgetown at 3 p.m. Check out the full schedule here.
