Colonials head to ECU for five games
Beginning Friday, the Colonials are set for five games over three days at ECU Softball Stadium in Greenville, N.C. They're scheduled to play ECU and Hampton twice and DePaul once as part of the event.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW (0-5) opened the season with a tremendous test at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. The Colonials put their best foot forward in the finale at Nancy Almaraz Stadium in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, battling No. 3 Oklahoma before falling, 5-2.
The 2019 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, Jenna Cone started her senior season with a productive weekend at the plate, hitting .357 (5-for-14) with a pair of RBIs. Against the Sooners, the California native's two-out RBI single in the third gave GW the lead. She was named to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts.
Megan Osterhaus was also selected to the All-Tournament Team. The sophomore pitcher saw action in four of the five contests, tossing a complete game vs. Oklahoma.
WELCOME TO THE CLUB:Â Four first-years made their collegiate debuts in Mexico.
Maggie Greco and Paris Orchard both played in four games on opening weekend. Greco scored a pair of runs, including one vs. Oklahoma, and also recorded her first career hit vs. Long Beach State, while Orchard stole a base in the opener vs. BYU and later notched her first hit vs. Utah Valley.
Newcomers Daniella Wilson (0-2, HBP) and Valentina Perrone (0-1) saw action as pinch hitters at the PV College Challenge.
RECORD WATCH:Â Cone enters the weekend with 90 career extra-base hits and needs one more to tie Victoria Valos (2012-15) for the GW record.
Cone's 50 home runs are already a program best and rank fourth nationally among active student-athletes. She also has 37 doubles and three triples over her decorated career in Buff and Blue.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:Â Host East Carolina went 2-3 last weekend at Coastal Carolina's Kickin' Chicken Classic with both its wins coming vs. Campbell. The Pirates were picked sixth in the AAC preseason poll.
Winners of three straight Big East titles, DePaul is off to a 2-3 start. The Blue Demons were tabbed as preseason conference favorites again before opening their season indoors at the Doc Halverson UNI-Dome Classic.
Hampton started the spring with a 15-4 win at North Carolina A&T last Saturday before the second game of the scheduled doubleheader was wiped out by rain. The Pirates have garnered headlines early this season with the addition of former Little League World Series star Mo'ne Davis.
ON DECK:Â GW travels to North Carolina again next weekend for the Seahawk Softball Classic at UNCW. The Colonials will face Eastern Kentucky, Brown and the host Seahawks during that tournament.
