Colonials set to square off with the Tribe to kick off 2020
SERVING FIRST: The George Washington women's tennis team begins its championship season on Saturday morning with a trip to Williamsburg, Va., to face William & Mary. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
RECAPPING THE FALL: The Colonials had a successful fall season competing in four tournaments. Sophomore Alexandra Vesikallio wrapped up fall play on a three-match win streak and tops the team with her overall 6-2 mark in singles play. In her first season in the Buff and Blue, Sarah Bodewes opened her collegiate career with five consecutive wins and concluded the fall with a 5-1 record. In doubles play, Bodewes and fellow first-year Luciana Kunkel boasted a 6-5 record, while the veteran pair of Katarina Marinkovikj and Melis Bayraktaroglu went 5-7.
NEW FACES: GW welcomes a pair of fresh faces in 2020. Jiaqing Mo joins the squad as a graduate after a successful playing career at Drury. Last season, Mo went 15-1 in singles play, including a 5-0 mark in conference action. The Colonials also welcome Lara McNaughten to the squad for the spring. Hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, McNaughten was ranked as a top-five U-18 doubles player in 2019 in New Zealand and was the Diocesan School Varsity Player of the Year. Both Mo and McNaughten will look to have an immediate impact on GW's lineup this spring.
ABOUT THE TRIBE: William & Mary also kicks off their dual match schedule on Saturday. Mila Saric tops the team with her 8-3 mark in singles action, while Charlotte Madison and Vitoria Okuyama pace the squad in doubles play with their 3-1 record.
