Colonials have strong showing at opening fall tournament

WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's tennis team kicked off its fall tournament slate with a strong weekend at the Bedford Cup.

In singles action, first-year Luciana Kunkel defeated opponents from Richmond, Towson and Maryland en route to a spot in the Wimbledon Flight final, where she ultimately fell to Richmond's Andy Campodonico 6-2, 6-1. Senior Melis Bayraktaroglu also had a strong showing in singles competition, making it to the consolation final of the Australian Open Flight.

The highlight of the Colonials weekend was in doubles play, where the pair of first-years Kunkel and Sarah Bodowes went head-to-head with Bayraktaroglu and Katarina Marinkovikj in the Old Bay Flight final. The senior and sophomore pair came out on top, defeating their Buff and Blue foes 7-6(3).

GW will be back in action September 27-29 at the UNCW Invite.
