George Washington Athletics mourns the loss of 2017 graduate and women's gymnastics alumna Alex de Moura, who passed away while swimming with friends in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico on Monday.
Â
Born January 4, 1995 in Philadelphia, PA, Alex was nothing short of a powerhouse in the Buff and Blue. A decorated performer, she was twice named to the East Atlantic Gymnastics League First Team for the all-around, among many other All-EAGL accolades she garnered on balance beam, vault, uneven bars and in the floor exercise in her four years.
Â
As elite as Alex was as a competitor, her standing as a captain, leader and overall joy to be around is what her coaches, teammates and classmates will remember most.
Â
"Her attitude was infectious," noted GW Gymnastics Coach Margie Foster-Cunningham. "She had a tenacity about her that set a standard for us, but she also wore a smile and carried herself with such poise that made her a favorite amongst us all. Alex was a beautiful athlete, and her performances displayed a special style, grace and strength. She was amazing in every way. Her star is indelible in our minds, though tragically it was taken from us far too soon."Â
Â
"Our hearts are grieving today for Alex's family, friends and GW teammates and classmates," said Director of Athletics and Recreation Tanya Vogel. "She added so much to our entire campus community, and we know that Alex's legacy and memory will never be forgotten by all of us who she touched."
Â
Alex competed for New Image Gymnastics on Long Island prior to coming to GW and was most recently served as a coach there for young gymnasts. An Organizational Sciences major at GW, she leaves behind her parents, Josephine and Alexandre, her brother, Nicholas, and two sisters, Isabella and Giovanna.Â
She will be laid to eternal rest on Monday, August 12th at 10am at the Church of Saint Joseph in Garden City, NY, with visitation hours on Sunday at Fairchild Sons Funeral Home.Â
A scholarship has been set up in memory of Alexandra Vittoria de Moura. Contributions in her memory can be made here.Â
