Fath, Pone, Nachtwey & Ortiz honored for academic excellence
WASHINGTON - Moritz Fath, Emils Pone, Peter Nachtwey and Jake Ortiz of George Washington men's swimming and diving have been honored for their excellence in the pool and the classroom as CSCAA Scholar All-Americans.
All four were recognized as honorable mention selections for earning at least a 3.50 GPA and also recording an NCAA B-cut time or competing at an NCAA regional qualifying diving meet. The group combined to help the Colonials claim a third straight Atlantic 10 title last February.
The A-10 Championship's Most Outstanding Performer, Fath earned the national honor for the third straight season, while Pone and Nachtwey were lauded for a second time.
"These honors for Moritz, Emils, Peter and Jake are a true indication of achievement at the highest level," head coach Brian Thomas said. "Experiencing competitive success while also maintaining excellence in the classroom is extremely challenging and requires incredible balance. We often talk about wanting to be the best option for those looking to combine athletics and academics at the highest level without sacrificing on either front, and these student-athletes are a great representation of that vision."
Fath, who owns a 3.53 GPA majoring in International Business, played a major role in lifting the Colonials to another A-10 title, collecting six gold medals at the conference meet. The junior from Germany put together a record-breaking week, setting four individual program marks, including A-10 bests in the 200 free (1:35.47) and 500 free (4:19.21). To close the season, he won a pair of silver medals and a bronze at the CSCAA National Invitational Championship in March.
A Finance and Economics double major with a 3.79 GPA, Pone totaled six A-10 golds of his own, highlighted by a conference-record swim in the 400-yard individual medley (3:47.52). The junior from Latvia followed that up by claiming medals in the 200 IM (A-10 record 1:45.66) and 200 back (1:44.01) at the CSCAA National Invitational Championship. He's set to represent his home country at this week at the World University Games in Italy.
Nachtwey was named Most Outstanding Diver at the A-10 Championships after earning gold on the 3-meter board and silver on 1-meter. The Ohio native wrapped a tremendous sophomore season at the NCAA Zone A Championships, setting a program record for platform diving (271.35). The Economics and Spanish double major holds a 3.75 cumulative GPA and was previously honored on the A-10 All-Academic Team.
Ortiz capped his collegiate diving career in style, earning a bronze on the 3-meter board. The senior from New York also finished fifth on 1-meter at the conference meet before advancing to the NCAA qualifying meet, where he paced the Colonials on 3-meter. The Communication major closed strong in the classroom, as well, earning a 3.80 GPA in his final semester to earn his first Scholar All-American honor.
