Women’s Rowing Finishes Second at A-10 Championship

Colonials post best team performance with program-high 48 points
PENNSAUKEN, N.J. – The George Washington women's rowing team went four-for-four in medal performances for the third straight season to finish the day with its best performance in program history at the 2019 Atlantic 10 Championship.
GW rode its four medal performances to a second-place finish to conclude its successful spring season. The Colonials medaled in all three scoring events in addition to a gold medal showing in the 3V8.
Rhode Island won the A-10 title with 54 points, just ahead of the Colonials' all-time program-high 48 points. Fordham and Massachusetts tied for third with 35 points, while Dayton and Saint Joseph's totaled an identical 29 points to share fifth, and Duquesne (29), George Mason (10), and La Salle (7) rounded out the A-10 Championship field.
The 3V8 kick started the Colonials' successful showing in the Grand Finals, finishing ahead of Massachusetts (7:31.099) to secure the gold medal with a time of 7:24.759.
The V4 continued the momentum with a solid second-place performance (8:18.849), finishing just behind Rhode Island (8:08.381), and steadily ahead of Duquesne (8:23.863), Massachusetts (8:30.498), Saint Joseph's (8:41.494), and Fordham (8:51.828).
The 2V8 race followed, with the boat taking home the silver medal in a close race that went neck-and-neck to the end. Rhode Island led the pack, finishing first by a mere 1.795 seconds with a time of 7:00.103, while the Colonials cruised past the finish line at 7:01.898, one second ahead of Massachusetts (7:02.306).
With Rhode Island (27 points) and the Colonials (24 points) in close contention for the Championship, it came down to the Varsity 8. Giving it all they had, the squad pushed down the stretch and finished just four seconds behind Rhode Island (6:41.248) to claim the silver medal.
Lauren Bennett and Maxine Cassell also earned First Team All-Conference honors while Laila Shehab and Kathryn Donohue earned spots on the Second Team All-Conference.
