Sierra Lange earned a spot on the All Mid-Atlantic First Team
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - In recognition of a historic spring, George Washington softball had a program-record four student-athletes land NFCA All Mid-Atlantic Region honors on Thursday, highlighted by a First-Team selection for ace pitcher Sierra Lange.
Jenna Cone (third base) and Jessica Linquist (catcher) were named to the All-Region Second Team for the Atlantic 10 co-champion Colonials, while Alessandra Ponce (designated player) took Third-Team honors. The group is now eligible for All-America consideration from the NFCA.
Lange earned her place on the First Team in the utility/pitcher spot thanks to a tremendous two-way season. The sophomore from Texas is the fourth All-Region First Team selection in program history, joining Elana Meyers (2007), Autumn Taylor (2013) and Cone (2017).
A First Team All A-10 pick, Lange has broken nearly every program pitching mark this spring. Entering Thursday's NISC Liberty Regional opener, she's compiled a 29-12 record with a 2.85 ERA and 222 strikeouts in 248 1/3 innings over 45 appearances.Â
Lange ranks fourth nationally in wins, including five shutouts, and is 24th in the country in strikeouts. She was named to the All A-10 Championship Team after earning three wins to power the Colonials to a share of their first conference crown.
Lange has also helped her cause as one of the A-10's top hitters, posting a conference-best .413 batting average. She's currently tied for third nationally with 81 hits and also ranks among the top 10 in the A-10Â in runs (49), doubles (17), triples (6), RBIs (38) and steals (17).
Cone picked up NFCA All-Region honors for the third time with her best season yet. The junior from California was named A-10 Player of the Year thanks to a conference-record tying 20 home runs and 66 RBIs with a .393 batting average and .820 slugging percentage.Â
Cone leads the A-10 and ranks among the top 20 nationally in homers, RBIs and slugging.Â
Linquist previously earned All A-10 Second Team honors in recognition of a breakout season from the leadoff spot in GW's nationally-ranked offense.
The junior from New Jersey has posted an A-10 best .500 on-base percentage with a program-record 64 runs scored and career-high 28 extra-base hits. Her season was highlighted by a 28-game hitting streak, which was the longest in the nation in almost five years.
It's the first All-Region selection for Linquist.
Ponce made the NFCA list for the second straight season thanks to a .352 batting average, team-high 18 doubles, seven home runs and 36 RBIs. The sophomore from Nevada was an All A-10 Second Team honoree and also earned a spot on the All-Championship team.
GW (42-16) continues its season this week with its first-ever postseason appearance at the National Invitational Softball Championship. The Colonials are slated to kick off play in the Liberty Regional on Thursday afternoon against Marshall.
