Colonials honored four seniors before final game at the Vern
WASHINGTONÂ - George Washington softball dropped Sunday's Atlantic 10 series finale to Dayton, falling, 9-0, in five innings on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (37-15, 13-7 A-10) clinched a winning weekend by taking both ends of Saturday's doubleheader, but they couldn't complete the sweep of the Flyers. They'll enter the final weekend of the regular season slotted third in the conference standings.
While GW's spirits were high after a pregame Senior Day ceremony honoring Criza Bulanadi, Jayme Cone, Marta Fuentes and Riley Tejcek, the Colonials couldn't carry the momentum over to the field.
Dayton took the early lead with a pair of runs in the second inning and then put the game out of reach with a seven-run fifth.
Dayton's Jessica Gilliam limited the Buff and Blue to one hit - a Sierra Lange single to lead off the fourth inning - en route to a shutout victory.
Lange was seeking her sixth straight A-10 win in the circle but took the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) in 4 1/3 innings. The GW ace struck out a pair to push her program-record total to 196 in 216 1/3 innings this season.
With her 1-for-2 effort at the plate, Lange upped her A-10 best batting average to .436.
UP NEXT:Â GW closes the regular season next weekend with an A-10 series at La Salle. The Colonials have locked up a spot in the six-team A-10 Championship, which begins May 8 at UMass.
