Colonials defeated in pair by Minutewomen
AMHERST, Mass. - GW softball came up short on both ends of a doubleheader Saturday to kick off a weekend Atlantic 10 series at Massachusetts.
The Colonials battled into the eighth inning in the opener at Sortino Field before the Minutewomen took the victory, 4-3, on a walk-off single. The home team rolled in the second game, earning a 14-1 win in five innings.
UMass 4, GW 3 (8 innings): The Colonials (30-13, 6-5 A-10) carried a two-run lead into the bottom of the sixth, but the Minutewomen tied the game via a two-run home run and won it on Madison Gimpl's bases-loaded single in the first extra inning.
Down 1-0 early, GW jumped in front with a pair of runs in the top of the second. Hannah Eslick tied the game with an RBI single before Jenna Cone's walk with the bases full forced in the go-ahead run.
Eslick made it 3-1 in the fifth, slamming a two-out single to center to bring home Alessandra Ponce.
Elena Shelepak paced the Colonials at the plate in the opener, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Eslick produced her third multi-RBI effort of the season, and Cone walked three times, including the free pass that produced her A-10 leading 55th RBI of the season.
Sierra Lange went the distance in the circle for the Buff and Blue, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits with seven strikeouts.
UMass 14, GW 1 (5 innings):Â The Minutewomen scored seven runs in the first inning and six more in the second to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Priscilla Martinez had two of GW's five hits and scored the Colonials' run in the second inning on a double by Ponce.
It was Ponce's team-leading 14th double of the season. Twenty of her 36 hits this season have gone for extra bases.
UP NEXT:Â The series concludes Sunday with a noon first pitch. The Colonials are back on the Mount Vernon Campus next Wednesday, hosting George Mason in an A-10 doubleheader.
