Zois tabbed as Gymnast of the Week, Banen named Rookie of the Week
WASHINGTON – The George Washington gymnastics team has claimed two East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) weekly awards. Fifth-year co-captain Alex Zois has been named EAGL Gymnast of the week while first-year Simone Banen earns Rookie of the Week honors. The pair picks up their second weekly honor each.
In fitting senior day fashion, Zois closed out her career in the Smith Center with a personal best 39.425 in the all-around to finish in a tie for first place, her third straight all-around title and seventh of the season. The score also ties the highest all-around in EAGL so far this season. The Crofton, Md., native posted a career-high and first place score of 9.875 on vault, a 9.825 on bars, a season-high matching second place score of 9.875 on beam, and a first place score of 9.850 on floor. Zois also finished the night pacing the squad in three events: vault, beam, and floor. The co-captain has cemented her position at the top of the all-around standings in EAGL and ranks 31st nationally.
Banen picks up her second EAGL Rookie of the Week honor after putting up solid scores on bars and floor at GW's Senior Day meet. Banen earned a career-high score of 9.850 on bars to place fifth while her 9.800 on floor ranked second on the team and earned her a spot on the podium at third. The Wyckoff, N.J., product ranks 11th in EAGL on bars, tied with NC State's Meredith Robinson.
GW will return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. for quad-meet action at East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) rival NC State, where the Colonials will also clash with Arizona and Texas Woman's.
