Colonials host crosstown Bison on Tuesday
Off to its best start in program history, George Washington softball kicks off a 17-game homestand Tuesday with a doubleheader against Howard. First pitch at GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus is set for noon.
LAST TIME OUT: GW (11-3) won four of five games last weekend at the Carolina Classic, including a pair of victories against Power 5 opponents.
Sierra Lange continued to lead the Colonials with her arm and her bat en route to tournament MVP honors. The sophomore from Texas finished the weekend 4-1 with a 1.09 ERA in 32 innings pitched, highlighted by shutouts of Florida Atlantic and host North Carolina. She closed the event by pitching a career-high nine innings to help the Colonials earn a 4-3 walk-off win over UNC Greensboro on Sunday.
Elena Shelepak was also picked to the all-tournament team after going 9-for-17 with a home run and a double, plus a team-high five RBIs, over the five games.
SIERRA'S STUNNING STATS: Lange currently leads the A-10 in every major pitching category, including wins (9), ERA (1.54), strikeouts (66), innings pitched (63 2/3) and complete games (7). Her win total ranks tied for eighth nationally.
Lange is also the A-10's leading hitter at .489 with 22 hits in 45 at-bats. She tops the conference in doubles (6) and ranks tied for second in runs scored (12) behind teammate Jessica Linquist.
HOME SWEET HOME: GW is off to a 4-0 start on its home field this season after sweeping doubleheaders vs. Mount St. Mary's and Lafayette last month. The Colonials went 19-7 at the Vern in 2018, highlighted by a program-record 13-game winning streak that spanned most of the month of March.
SCOUTING HOWARD: The Bison sit at 3-14 after taking three losses last weekend at Georgetown's District Classic.
Last season, GW swept a doubleheader from Howard with both victories by run rule. In the second game, Kaitlin Buff and Ashley Pilcher combined for a five-inning no-hitter, the fourth in program history. The Colonials lead the all-time series, 6-1.
ON DECK: GW hosts the Colonial Classic this weekend with 11 games scheduled at the Vern between Friday and Sunday. The Buff and Blue will play in five of them with two contests on Friday and Sunday and one on Saturday.
