Colonials raised more than $2,600 for Children’s National Medical Center
Noah Lubin took the stage in the fourth-floor gymnasium at the Lerner Health and Wellness Center on Saturday at noon to officially kick off the GW Children's Miracle Network Dance Marathon.
After a year of helping to plan the 12-hour party, the junior goalkeeper on the GW men's soccer team was well aware of the challenge ahead – and totally excited about it.
"Once it's 11-12 at night, you don't feel anything in your body anymore," Lubin said with a smile. "You hear the music, and you're just going. At that point, you're just really motivated by doing everything you can for the kids."
In total, this dance marathon raised $120,543.68 to help the non-profit Children's National Medical Center with programming to benefit its pediatric patients.
It's become one of Lubin's favorite days of the year. The New York native attended the annual event as a first-year before becoming involved in the planning as a sophomore.
This time around, Lubin joined the executive board, which earned him a role on stage as one of the event's emcees. The New York native also got his GW teammates involved in the fun.
The Colonials spent recent weeks fundraising for the marathon and then joined in Saturday's groove-filled celebration. Together, they raised more than $2,600 for the cause.
"I'm so proud of everyone," Lubin said. "It's great to see all my friends and teammates who are getting my back by coming out and supporting. It really means a lot to know there is a brotherhood of guys who want to support me and be a part of this."
Lubin has been passionate about doing his part since his first dance marathon.
The emcee that day asked everyone to pull out their cell phones. At any given time, there are about three dozen babies in the Children's National NICU unit weighing less than an iPhone, she told the crowd.
"I was blown away," Lubin said.
Lubin was more motivated than ever to help after a fall visit to Children's National to experience some of the programs the dance marathon donations have supported, such as the healing garden offering access to nature for children battling serious illness.
The Colonials gladly joined the charge, both by collecting donations and showing off their dance moves.
"I'd say our dancing is questionable at best, but we're really happy to be here," junior defender Gabriel Seemungal said. "It's a great time."
Seemungal added to the fundraising total Saturday with a little help from his friends back home in England.
Seemungal was among the group called off the dance floor and challenged to collect a certain figure before being allowed to return. In short order, he raised $30 and returned to the festivities.
"I just texted everyone in my phone," Seemungal said. "Old coaches. Old teachers. Just everyone. I knew they'd be willing to help."
Lubin was the lone Colonial to tackle all 12 hours, which is a nod to the length of a nurse's shift at Children's National.
His Saturday started with a 6 a.m. wakeup call to get everything ready and didn't end until clean up finished at 1 a.m. It's an exhausting day, but he's already looking forward to next year.
"You think about how fortunate you are that you grew up healthy and had a wonderful childhood whereas there are kids in the hospital right now who aren't able to do that," Lubin said. "We're helping them in any way that we can. That's what keeps us going – that and a lot of coffee."
