Men's Swimming & Diving sits seventh at national meet
CLEVELAND - Emils Pone set a record in the 200-yard individual medley Thursday as GW men's swimming and diving kicked off the CSCAA National Invitational Championship.
The junior from Latvia touched in 1:45.66 to take bronze and drop Andrea Bolognesi's three-year-old program mark.
Pone, Moritz Fath and Alexander Auster picked up individual medals on the first night of competition at Busbey Natatorium for the Colonials, who sit in seventh place out of 24 squads at 162.5 points with two days to go.
Pone just missed Bolognesi's 200 IM record in his morning swim before going even faster in finals to shave nearly a second off the mark. He also snapped the Atlantic 10 record set by La Salle's Fabian Bergman last year. Youssef Ragab also scored in the event in 18th (1:52.24).
Fath was runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle, dropping more than four seconds off his prelim time to finish in 4:21.28. First-year Josh Legge won the B final there in 4:27.45, as well.
Auster earned bronze in the 50-yard freestyle, tying with Josh Walters of Cal Baptist in a sizzling time of 20.33 seconds.
The senior from Canada was also part of GW's 200 free team with Tommi Wolst, Max Forstenhaeusler and Dylan Arzoni. The group collected another bronze with a time of 1:20.69, just off its recent A-10 Championship-winning pace.
Wolst earned a spot in the A final in the 50-yard breaststroke, moving up two spots from his prelim performance to take eighth in 25.24 seconds.
Forstenhaeusler won the B final of the 50-yard butterfly (:22.15), good for 11th.
Kaden Schwaiger, a first-year from Michigan, recorded an excellent morning swim to qualify for the A final of the 50-yard backstroke and proceeded to finish 10th in 23.06 seconds. Andrew Cho won the B final (:22.95) in the event to take 11th.
UP NEXT: The meet continues Friday and Saturday. Preliminary racing begins at 9:30 a.m. with finals at 6 p.m. on both days.
